DENTAL HEALTH
Research tells us that a significant number of children under 5 years experience poor dental health. This is especially the case for rural areas. This results in cavities, various mouth diseases and nutritional deficiencies.

This year the Community Health Promotion team will manage a project titled “Smiles 4 Miles” for the region. This project aims to prevent poor oral health by improving prevention strategies, identification, referral and access to services. It involves working together early childhood and education staff to improve their skills and taking a whole of school approach to improving prevention.

PREVENTING OBESITY
Australia is experiencing an alarming increase in childhood obesity. This results in all kinds of social, emotional and physical problems both in childhood and later in life. Evidence tells us the best prevention strategies include increasing physical activity, improving nutrition and strengthening self esteem.

This year the Community Health Promotion Team will continue to implement the “Children’s Healthy Activities and Mentoring Program for Schools” (CHAMPS) with Beechworth Primary School and will further extend the project to other schools within the region.
